Message from the President – Cathy Ferguson

Cathy Ferguson, ORNAC PresidentHappy New Year!

I hope that you have had a wonderful 2016 so far and I wish you all health and happiness throughout the year.

Over the past months ORNAC has undergone many changes. We are actively working, along with Executive Director Heather Dow, and the team at Events and Management Plus, on making improvements to ensure that ORNAC is representing and advocating on behalf of the members as best as possible.

The ability for ORNAC to communicate quickly with its members is extremely important. Newsletters and e-blasts keep members aware of issues and help explain developments.

ORNAC has worked very hard toward bilingualism, within the association, in order to represent our English and French speaking members. ORNAC is committed to now providing all communication, including this Journal, in both official languages. I am very excited to announce that the ORNAC website has also been fully translated and users can now flip between English and French.

The ORNAC Board and Executive has a team of certified English-French and French-English translators with expertise in translating within the medical field. Our translation team guarantees quality by using real people, a streamlined process, and experienced professionals with a strong background in the subject matter. Their personal review of each item, and additional proofreading when needed, help ensure ORNAC is in good hands!

I am pleased to share that ORNAC is launching a series of webinars, for members, with information and education on a variety of important topics that are relevant to perioperative nursing. Please keep an eye out for communication regarding dates and times for these fantastic educational opportunities.

Annual General Meeting

The next Annual General Meeting will take place in Charlottetown, PEI, Saturday, May 14, 2016. More Perioperative Nurses Week Highlights!

Photo taken during the 34th Annual Provincial Conference in October, Grand Falls NL.

Toronto Western News (TWH) OR Nurses – From November 9 to 13, the TWH OR Nursing Staff hosted a booth in the Atrium to celebrate Perioperative Nurses’ Week. The week was observed across North America and recognizes the skills, knowledge, and expertise that perioperative registered nurses provide to surgery patients before, during and after their operations. Visitors to the booth learned about the varied expertise and different instruments needed for specific surgeries such as craniotomies and bone and joint procedures as well as how surgical nurses work to uphold high quality patient care and improve surgical safety. “The week offers the opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by Perioperative Registered Nurses across Canada,” said Rose Puopolo, Nurse Manager, TWH OR. “We are honoured to have participated in recognizing the importance of our profession and the dedication of our staff here at TWH."

"This week we  enjoyed an evening of education and fellowship as well as a potluck luncheon. Just a few ways we add some fun to our busy days at Woodstock General Hospital." Janice Koekebakker RN,BHScN,CPN,RNFA, Director of Patient Care.
