Excellence Awards
The Gloria Stephens Award for Excellence as an Educator of Perioperative Nursing recognizes an ORNAC member who fosters continuous professional development and promotes evidence based best practice guidelines.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Demonstrates innovative and motivational teaching abilities and methods
- Promotes a climate of learning for the novice and passion for educating that encourages, challenges, and inspires a model of professionalism for everyone
- Shares their knowledge and experience with colleagues to build a collaborative work environment
- Upholds and implements ORNAC's Guidelines for Perioperative Practice in Canada
Nomination Selection Process
Nominations will be submitted by an ORNAC member. ORNAC's Awards committee will review and score the nominations based on their ability to meet the awards criteria. You may not self-nominate for the Gloria Stephens Award. Nomination must include two (2) letters of recommendation from a healthcare professional who may or may not be an ORNAC member.
Recognition & Reimbursement
The Award is presented at the National Conference when there is an appropriate nominee. The Award is funded by Ms. Gloria Stephens.

The Lorne Flower award recognizes an individual from the ORNAC Board or Executive (present or past) who has made an outstanding contribution to ORNAC.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Demonstrates administrative leadership by facilitating or supporting the development and/or enhancement of ORNAC's mission and vision
- Actively involved in strategic planning and evaluation of perioperative nursing in Canada
- Participates in ORNAC committee work
- Networks with perioperative nurses across national and international regions
- Consistently demonstrates effective interpersonal skills

The Chris Downey Rising Star award recognizes a novice perioperative nurse who has less than 7 years of perioperative nursing experience.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Possesses a strong evidence-based perioperative nursing knowledge base and practical skill set
- Demonstrates special attributes that indicate they will be a future leader
- Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary care teams
- Participates in professional nursing organizations outside of the workplace
- Proactively seeks and/or creates opportunities to make a difference in patient care or to affect change

The RMAC Surgical Patient Safety Award recognizes perioperative registered nurse leaders in the innovative field of patient safety, who have developed and/or described relevant and practical patient safety strategies.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Involve system innovations, advances in education, communications strategy, patient advocacy, or research focusing on safety-related outcomes in perioperative care
- Establishment of a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to safer care delivery
- Introduction of new technologies / innovative practices that improve patient and/or clinician safety
- Adoption of a comprehensive approach to program implementation (examples may include process metrics, patient-reported outcomes, performance indicators, educational components, benchmarking, and system-wide implementation)
- Evidence that patient and healthcare worker safety is improved
- Project/process improvements should apply to perioperative care
Nomination Selection Process
Poster/Paper Presenter(s) at a National Conference must be a member(s) of ORNAC and have submitted an abstract and biography to the ORNAC National Conference Planning Committee.
ORNAC Journal article(s) eligibility shall be determined by the Awards Committee prior to the ORNAC National Conference via article review of relevant articles published in the two (2) calendar years preceding the National Conference where the Award shall be presented.
Recognition & Reimbursement
The Award is presented at the closing ceremonies of the National Conference when there is an appropriate nominee. The Award is funded by RMAC.
