Achievement Awards
The Drake Thompson Writing Award recognizes the talents, knowledge and dedication of perioperative nurses in Canada.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- To be eligible for consideration the article must support or enhance the use of evidence to inform perioperative nursing practice
- Articles do not have to be original research to be considered but must be in the peer-review section
- All authors must be an ORNAC member or associate member at the time of publication
- Articles co-authored by Operating Room Nurses and a physician or a nurse whose primary focus is not perioperative nursing will not be eligible
Nomination Selection Process
The Awards Chair will collaborate with the chair of the Editorial advisory committee to determine which published journal articles are eligible. The award is open to all eligible authors (including a team of authors) who publish in the ORNAC Journal during the publishing period spanning 2 years.
Recognition & Reimbursement
The Award is presented at the National Conference or at a provincial event in the non National Conference years. The award is funded by Johnson & Johnson MedTech.

The Isabelle Adams Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing recognizes an outstanding nurse who has made a significant contribution to perioperative nursing in Canada through exemplary practice, leadership, service, and education.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Excellence in the practice and art of the perioperative nursing
- Commitment to utilizing evidenced based research and promoting the ORNAC guidelines locally, provincially, and nationally
- Support and development of perioperative nursing through role modeling, education, and mentorship
Nomination Selection Process
Nominations will be submitted by an ORNAC member. ORNAC's Awards committee will review and score the nominations based on their ability to meet the awards criteria. You may not self-nominate for the Isabelle Adams Award for Excellence. Nomination must include two (2) letters of recommendation from a healthcare professional who may or may not be an ORNAC member.
Recognition & Reimbursement
The Award is presented at the National Conference when there is an appropriate nominee. The Award confers high professional recognition by one's peers without monetary award.

The Muriel Shewchuk Leadership Award recognizes a Canadian perioperative registered nurse whose leadership made an outstanding contribution to the profession of perioperative nursing at the local, provincial/territorial, national or international level.
The nomination period for the Awards is from Dec 1 to March 1.
Criteria
- Manifests qualities of effective leadership and how they contribute to excellence in perioperative nursing
- Mobilizes and unify others in ORNAC practices and guidelines for the improvement of perioperative care
- Proactively drives improvements through utilization and/or participation in research
- Facilitates and promotes team development through role modeling and mentoring
- Works collaboratively and empowers others
Nomination Selection Process
Nominations will be submitted by an ORNAC member. ORNAC's Awards committee will review and score the nominations based on their ability to meet the awards criteria. You may not self-nominate for the Muriel Shewchuk Leadership Award. Nomination must include two (2) letters of recommendation from a healthcare professional who may or may not be an ORNAC member.
Recognition & Reimbursement
The Award is presented at the National Conference when there is an appropriate nominee. The Award is jointly funded by the Shewchuk family and ORNAC.
