Type of Program: Advanced certificate

Theory: six courses delivered by asynchronous online delivery

Psychomotor skills lab: 30 hours (5 days)

Clinical Experience: 400 hours (10 weeks)
(4 weeks instructor-led followed by 6 weeks preceptor-led experience)

Length of Program: 23 weeks full time equivalent, all courses must be completed within 3 years

Admission Requirements:

  • Licensed with the registered nurses licensing body in the province where you will participate in the clinical experience. Your registration must be active and current in order to participate in the clinical component.
  • Prior to participating in the clinical experience, you must have proof of current CPR health Care Provider/AED Level "C" certificate and current immunization.

Upon successful completion of the program students may also be eligible for:

  • 3 transfer credits from the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan;
  • 6 transfer credits from Athabasca University;
  • Practice hours to maintain registration with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association if you are a registered nurse in Saskatchewan while taking the program.

Grant MacEwan University's Centre for Professional Nursing Education offers a post-diploma certificate in perioperative nursing for registered nurses.

Offered through distance delivery using online and print material, this post-diploma certificate orientates the student to both theoretical knowledge and clinical skills required to work in the operating room.

Upon successful completion of the program and fulfillment of the clinical hours, nurses are eligible to write the Canadian Nurses Association certification for nursing specialties in perioperative nursing.

Type of Program: This 402 hour RN Perioperative Nursing Program is currently offered as a full-time, in classroom, program. The 15 week program offers 9 weeks, Wednesday to Friday, classroom theory and hand-on simulated operating room lab, as well as 6 weeks, Monday to Friday, preceptored clinical experience in a teaching or acute care community hospital.

A hybrid (online/in class) program will be initiated Spring 2011.

Upon successful completion of the course, students may be awarded two credits from Ryerson University towards the post graduate BScN degree program.

Entrance Requirements: Registered Nurse with a current College of Nurses of Ontario Certificate of registration.

Type of Program: The RNPDC offers both a 4-month on-site Perioperative Nursing Program (PONP) and a 10-month part-time distance PONP. The PONP consists of 47 comprehensive print-based lessons that are supported with required readings, online video library, graphics, and internet links. Interactive opportunities, which include skill development sessions and simulations, are also provided to enhance knowledge and skill development. Clinical learning experiences are provided in perioperative areas at selected hospitals under the guidance of PONP faculty.

Both programs will consist of clinical learning experiences scheduled in the preadmission/same day units, operating rooms, and post-anesthetic care units.

  • 104 hours of skill development sessions
  • 280 hours of clinical practicum
  • 15 hours of independent study per week on average for the full-time study option and 8 hours of independent study per week on average for the part-time study option
  • Skill development sessions will be in Halifax.

Every effort is made to provide required clinical learning experiences at the site closest to the learner's home; however, traveling might be required.

Registered nurses with prior knowledge, skills, or experience fundamental to the practice of perioperative nursing may qualify to receive credit towards program requirements.

Entrance Requirements: Registered Nurse with a current professional license; current BLS-C, reference from immediate supervisor, manager, or designate; immunization status; and a resume with cover letter detailing your professional experience and importance of the program to your career.

Type of Program: Program consists of four courses. Two theory courses offered through innovative distance learning (asynchronous and synchronous online delivery). Skills lab- held in Grande Prairie (may vary); clinical practicum -sites throughout Canada. Clinical practicum supported by instructor and preceptor. Full time study recommended.

Length of Program: 6 months

Entrance Requirements: 1 year recent registered nursing experience or letter of recommendation, official transcripts from basic registered nursing program, current provincial/territorial nursing registration, current CPR and Hepatitis B immunization.
