PERIOPERATIVE NURSES – THE VOICE OF OUR PATIENTS

Advocacy: To act on behalf of another person, speaking for persons who cannot speak for themselves, or intervening to ensure views are heard. ~ Ecker, M. & Bouchal, S., 2010, p. 92-93

On behalf of the board, ORNAC acknowledges and honours the work of Perioperative Registered Nurses across Canada during the week of November 6th - 10th 2017, Perioperative Nurses week.

How are we the voices of our patients? It is through our role as patient advocates that we become the voice of our patients. This advocacy role is exemplified when we uphold and practice according to the ORNAC Standards, Guidelines and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered Nurses.

It is in the performance of excellence at work that we truly advocate for our patients. Protecting, comforting, caring and communicating through:

  • giving the patient undivided attention;
  • establishing a trusting relationship;
  • verifying patient information and medical history in medical records;
  • ensuring informed consent has been obtained before the surgical procedure begins;
  • positioning patients correctly
  • protecting patients from harm through evidence based care practices
  • respecting patients wishes
  • maintaining patients dignity, privacy and confidentiality
  • giving direction to family regarding waiting rooms and keeping them notified of patient status (OR procedure electronic boards);
  • Conveying information to perioperative team members during the Safe Surgery checklist;
  • being present both mentally and physically;
  • ensuring the correct set up in the operating room theatre and correct equipment is available and ready;
  • maintaining the sterile field

ORNAC’s mission, vision and core values support patient advocacy through promotion and advancement of excellence in the provision of safe perioperative care for patients and being the leader in perioperative practice & patient safety.

Happy Perioperative Nurses Week!

SHARON HOWLETT

Eight years ago I watched my mother walk away from me. She was wearing a johnny shirt and hospital issue robe and was walking with a perioperative Registered Nurse to the operating room. My father and I returned to the Daysurgery waiting room to wait for Mom. Her surgery was the starting point for a long battle with breast cancer. A modified radical mastectomy with nineteen involved lymph nodes removed that day, followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. At the time I was a certified perioperative Registered Nurse in a different hospital within our province, and very proud of the work that I did....

Happy Perioperative Nurses Week!

As we reflect this week on our practice:

Celebrate the patients who surrender their trust to us,
May we hold it delicately in our hands
Doing the best that we can to provide safe care
May we be focused and attentive to their needs
Have the expertise to identify risks and the courage to speak up
Have the grace and collaboration to work together as a unified team
Remembering we are guests in their lives during one of their most memorable experiences

So proud to work with each and everyone of you,

Tara Willemsen

2013 Perioperative Nurses Week: Generations Working Together to Raise Standards

Proclamation

Generations Working Together to Raise Standards

In October 1983 in Montreal, the first Standards of Practice committee met. Joan Donald was the first chairperson. The other committee members were Muriel Shewchuk and Gloria Stephens. In 1986, the first standards document was published under the title Recommended Standards for Operating Room Nursing Practice.

Since 1986 ORNAC has committed to updating and publishing perioperative nursing practice standards. Over the years ORNAC has become synonymous with these standards. Many ORNAC Board members and ancillary volunteers have dedicated time, energy and effort into keeping the nursing practice standards current and relevant.

In practice environments the standards are used by a range of nurses who have anywhere from 3 days to 30 years of perioperative nursing experience. Collectively these generations work to sustain excellence in perioperative patient care and nursing practice. The ORNAC Standards are the cornerstone of that practice.

On behalf of ORNAC, I would like to thank all perioperative nurses who focus their care on patient safety and best practice. Thank you for using the standards to demonstrate that you are a leader in patient safety.

Happy Perioperative Nurses’ Week!

Warmest Regards,

Rupinder Khotar RN, BScN, CPN(C)
ORNAC President

2012 Perioperative Nurses Week: Enhancing teams through collaborative practice

Proclamation

Enhancing Teams through Collaborative Practice

The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) is honored to recognize the dedication of perioperative Registered Nurses across our nation. This year Perioperative Nurses Week is November 11 – 17, 2012. It is the time to acknowledge and highlight the outstanding contributions of perioperative Registered Nurses.

Today’s health care system has evolved from the clear‐cut boundaries between disciplines to fluid boundaries. This change demands enhanced collaboration between the members of different health care disciplines. Gone are the days of living in silos!   Collaboration is working together for the benefit of all. In health care, collaboration is synonymous with teamwork. The operating rooms have always embraced the concept of teamwork. Today, collaborative health care professionals work together cooperatively. The safe quality care provided to our patients is dependent on the complimentary backgrounds, skills, knowledge, and collective competencies of the team.

For collaborative practice to be successful, the collaborators must share a similar vision. Communication between team members is the key. Communication must be purposeful, respectful, and honest. Collaboration and good communication help prevent errors and promote positive patient outcomes.

ORNAC proudly recognizes the contributions made by our members in all aspects of perioperative practice.

Happy Perioperative Nurses Week!

November 13 – 19, 2011

Proclamation

Every surgical patient deserves a perioperative Registered Nurse

The Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC) is honored to recognize and highlight the contributions of perioperative Registered Nurses to patient care. This year Perioperative Nurses Week is November 13 - 19, 2011. This is the time to recognize and acknowledge all perioperative nursing colleagues across Canada.

It is the depth and breadth of knowledge that the perioperative Registered Nurse possesses that sets them apart from all other health care providers in the perioperative environment. “Using critical thinking skills that are guided by the ORNAC Standards, Guidelines and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered Nursing Practice and provincial legislation, nursing knowledge is used to address the physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual responses of the patient” (p. 17).

Please commend yourself for continually striving for excellence in patient care and remember, "You are a vital part of patient safety".

Happy Perioperative Nurses Week!
