I have formed a National Conference Planning team with the assistance of Cathy Ferguson, ORNAC president, which has been working diligently for the past two years, under my direction to put together an amazing conference for all Perioperative nurses to be held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, April 30 - May 4, 2017. We have also built in succession planning with Linda White working as the national conference planning committee chair who will step up at the end of this conference to form her own team to plan the 2019 national ORNAC conference to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Kim is a Clinical Nurse Educator in the main Surgical Suite, at the University of Alberta Hospital, and a Sessional Faculty/Instructor in the Perioperative Program at MacEwan University in Edmonton. She has worked in all areas of Perioperative nursing over her 32 nursing career. Kim received and continues to maintain her Canadian Nurse's Perioperative Certification and sits as a current member of the CNA Perioperative Examination committee. She has spent many years being involved in all aspects of ORNAC - sitting on her regional, provincial and the national ORNAC board.

Rupinder is the OR Nursing Supervisor at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. She has been an OR nurse since 1992 and worked as one of the educators of the Providence Health Care (PHC) Perioperative Nursing Program for 10 years before taking over her present role. She is the past Chair of the ORNAC Standards Committee , served as President Elect from 2011-2013 and as ORNAC President from 2013-2015.

The Governance component of the Advocacy Pillar has overseen the work of the creation and completion of Letters of Continuation and of Bylaws for the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC). This occurred following the proclamation of the Federal Not For Profit Corporations Act in 2013. The Act is much more prescriptive and the Bylaws did not need to be as extensive as the previous Bylaws.

Patricia Pocock is a health care leader with experience in perioperative and surgical services system alignment and program planning. Currently a consultant in perioperative services, Patricia, a graduate of the University of Windsor and a registered nurse, worked in many capacities at St. Joseph’s Health Care, London including leadership of the operating room, post anesthetic care unit, intensive care unit, respiratory therapy and lithotripsy program. Prior to retirement she held the position of director, perioperative services, urology clinic, and central processing until 2005. She has served on the Board of Directors for St Joseph’s Health Care, London for the past six years. She has been involved in Perioperative Consulting for the last ten years, including acting as Senior Consultant for the Surgical Efficiency Targets Program with the Ministry of Health in the implementation of this program. Pat is a founding member and past co-chair of the Canadian Operating Room Leaders Network; past president of the Lung Association; a founding member, past president, and treasurer of the London and District Operating Room Nurses Association; and a past Board Member of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada. She is currently the Co Chair of the ORNAC Advocacy Pillar She was awarded the Excellence in Nursing, Leadership, Coaching and Mentorship award from St. Joseph’s in 2003 and is a 1992 Sisters of St. Joseph award for excellence recipient.

Research and Nursing Informatics

Christine Downey

Three project charters were established for the RNI Pillar in 2013. These charters included:

  1. website redevelopment (webpages and membership database);
  2. validation process for standards of practice; and
  3. assessment of the current status of Canadian perioperative nursing research (Cardinal Health Research Grant).

Chris Downey, RN BScN CPN(C) MSc RNFA
Chris has been a Perioperative Registered Nurse for 37 years and is currently a consultant in the area of Perioperative Nursing Practice. Chris also works in a part time capacity as an RNFA. Chris is an alumnus of the University of Ottawa, (BScN- Magna Cum Laude), and Queen’s University, Kingston (MSc-Nursing Research) and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (RNFA). Chris was initially certified CPN(C) in 1998. Chris has been a member of the Operating Room Nurses Association of Ontario (ORNAO) since 1990. Chris is a Past President of ORNAO and served on the ORNAC board as President Elect- ORNAO, 2003-2005, President- ORNAO, 2005-2007, and 2009-2011 as the Chair of the Registered Nurse First Assistant Network of Canada (RNFANC) ORNAC Affiliate group.  Chris was a member of the ORNAC Standards Committee during each of these periods of service. Chris has practiced as a general duty Perioperative Nurse, a Perioperative Clinical Educator and a Perioperative Nurse Manager. Chris has implemented two computer applications within the Perioperative setting (ORSOS and PICIS) and has always had a passion for computers. Chris was recruited in 2013 to become the Pillar Chair of Research and Nursing Informatics and was asked to continue the role until 2017. As part of the mandate of this pillar, Chris chaired the 2014-2015 ORNAC website redesign committee. Chris currently serves as a CoChair with the ORNAC Standards Committee 2015-2017 (Standards Validation Process).


Marketing

Marlene Skucas

The Marketing Pillar is one of 5, of the pillar structures of ORNAC. It encompasses the website, social media (Facebook and Twitter), the ORANC Journal, boutique, advertising and brochures. The chair has a term of 2 years with the option to extend for an additional 2 years.

Marlene has 30+ years of perioperative nursing experience. She presently is employed as the Operating Room Unit Manager at Cranbrook Regional Hospital in British Columbia. She has been an active member on the local and provincial level boards for many years. She helped develop the posters and a pamphlet advertised on the PRNABC website for attracting new members and was the recipient of the PRNABC recognition award in 2012. Marlene is looking forward to working with the energetic group on the ORNAC board.
